This year’s Design Skills Symposium which is being hosted by Architecture + Design Scotland, South Ayrshire Council and the Improvement Service will take place in Ayr will focus on better briefing for building and settlements.
 
The basis of any masterplan, public investment, or planning policy is a clear brief which supports the civic lives of our communities and describes how the built environment enables them to be successful. A good brief is about both consequences and constraints. We need to start with a clear story of the ambitions, values and expectations of a community and then match these to the art of the possible.
 
Better briefs are user driven. In advance of the Design Skills Symposium, A+DS will engage with a range of user groups to derive clear qualitative expressions of the lives people want to lead in this place.
 
This will be used to drive a series of workshops where participants will derive design briefs to inform spatial scenario testing. To explore the briefing process, the Symposium will work at two scales: the whole place, and the street.
